Welcome to the School Maths Blog.

Year 1 Maths

Thank you for taking the time to read our new St Barnabas Maths Blog. The aim of the Blog is to let you know  what is happening in maths lessons across the school. During the term, each year group will be sharing information about something that they have done. You will also get to hear about how maths is taught and what maths lessons involve.

This week Year 1 have investigated number bonds for 10 and 20. The children used counters and Numicon to support them in finding as many different answers as they could. Many of the maths lessons in Year 1 involve practical hands-on activities where children have access to a range of resources. The aim of this approach is to build their understanding of basic mathematical concepts, how numbers work and how they fit together in sequences. Allowing children to experience and handle physical (concrete) objects can help them to visualise numbers and deepen their understanding.

The children have also been learning about taking a systematic approach when investigating number facts in maths. This is to help them find as many answers as they can. The photograph in the link below shows one child starting to take this approach.

Come back next week to find out more.
