Term 2 Week 2

WB: 9.11.20

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we will be subtracting two numbers with more than 4-digits.  We will be learning to exchange using column method and solving calculations that are represented pictorially.  We will also be using our reasoning skills to work out the digits that are missing in a calculation when the answer is given, but not all the digits in the two numbers that are subtracted are there.  To solve these types of problems we will need to use our knowledge of inverse.  We will continue to use manipulatives to support our understanding.

In English, we are levelling up and improving our narratives about ‘Journey’ by Aaron Becker.  Our writing task is to look carefully at our next steps to make our stories even better.  Lilac Class will also be reading poems about Space in preparation for our own poetry writing. We are now reading Chapter Seven of ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’.  Our focus is to be ‘word detectives’, exploring and working out the meaning of unusual words by looking at the context of the sentence to give us clues.

In RE this week, our work about ‘Incarnation’ will consider why people believed that Jesus was the Messiah at the time of his birth.  We will also be discussing the qualities and skills that a Messiah should have and why.

YIn Topic, we are going to be learning about the religious beliefs of the Ancient Mayans.  We will find out about their gods, temples, the role of their priests and types of religious ceremonies they had.  We will also be learning about why the afterlife was so important to them and why we know so much about their religious beliefs.  In Music, we will be listening to music that composers have created about the Moon and space.  Our focus is to think about these questions:  What different dynamics and instruments have the composers used to describe space?  How does the music make you feel and why?  How is the music structured?  In Science, we are moving on from our work about the phases of the Moon and will be finding out about why we have day and night.  What happens to the Sun at night and why does it appear to move across the sky during the day?
