Term 4 Week 1

What we are learning in Lilac Class for the week beginning 19.2.24

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 19.2.24

For Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are learning more about fractions.  We will find out how to multiply a unit fraction by an integer by writing multiplication as repeated addition.  Lilac Class are representing this question as a bar model. We will then move onto multiplying a non-unit fraction by an integer using bar models and number lines to make a link with repeated addition.  After this, Lilac Class are multiplying a mixed number by an integer, exploring a range of methods to build understanding.  Which method is the most efficient?

In English this week in Lilac Class, we are starting to plan a narrative poem about life in the workhouse.  We will be using our Street Child text, other texts, BBC documentaries and photographs for stimulus and ideas.  We will then be drafting our poems written in the first person from the perspective of someone who is living in a workhouse during the Victorian period.

For Whole Class Guided Reading Lilac Class are reading Chapters 8, 9 and 10 of Berlie Doherty’s ‘Street Child’ entitled ‘The Carpet-Beaters’. ‘The Jaw of the Iron Dog’ and ‘Lame Betsy’.  Examples of our inference questions, where we read between the lines are: ‘Find and copy a sentence which shows Jim was not sure how to escape’, ‘How do you think Jim felt when he saw the fountain?’ and ‘Why do you think the woman gave him some stew?’

For RE in Lilac Class, we are starting our new unit of learning entitled ‘Salvation’.  This week we are answering our Big Question ‘What did Jesus do to save Human beings?’ as formative assessment.

For Time and Place, Lilac Class are examining photos of Victorian children from a variety of backgrounds.  What do these photographs tell us about their lives?  In pairs, we will be annotating these photographs. For Science in Lilac Class, we are writing up our investigation where we tested materials for their level of conductivity and where we found out whether they were electrical insulators or electrical conductors.  For Design and the Arts, we are starting to learn about William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement.  We will be creating wallpaper using polyprint tiles based on the designs of William Morris.  This week we are designing a repeated pattern based on the theme of nature.
