Term 3 Week 1

What we are doing in Lilac Class for the week beginning 8.1.24

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 8.1.24

For Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are adding fractions with a total greater than 1. Answers will be improper fractions and we will be converting these into mixed numbers.  Lilac Class will be continuing to represent the addition of fractions using pictorial or concrete representations.  We will also be adding to a mixed number using our knowledge of partitioning and this will lead us onto adding two mixed numbers investigating efficient methods.  Lilac Class will then be subtracting fractions containing denominators that are multiples of the same number.  Pictorial representations such as bar models and number lines will help support understanding.

In English this week in Lilac Class, we are planning a viewpoint narrative.  This piece of extended writing will be based on the first chapter of Berlie Doherty’s Street Child entitled ‘The Shilling Pie’. This week we will be involved in acting out this chapter in groups and completing a story planner where we are exploring our use of ‘brilliant vocabulary’.  Lilac Class will not only be brainstorming vocabulary as a class but will also be using a thesaurus to develop language.

As stated above, our Whole Class Guided Reading text this term is Street Child by Berlie Doherty.  This text is based on the life of a boy called Jim Jarvis and Victorian London in the 1860s. We will be reading the Preface and Chapter One ‘The Shilling Pie’.  Lilac Class are exploring the difference between the first and third person and the role the narrator plays in the preface.

In RE, we are examining texts from Exodus 1:8-14 and 1:22.  We will be highlighting key phrases from the Old Testament and explaining what each passage is about. Lilac Class are going to match key vocabulary such as oppressed, persecute, justice, injustice, freedom and salvation to parts of these passages that are about the persecution of the Israelites by the Egyptians.

For Time and Place, we will be using primary and secondary sources to find out information about Queen Victoria.  We will be finding out for example, answers to the following:  What sort of person was she?  How did she feel when she became Queen?  What was her childhood like?  How long did she reign?  For Science in Lilac Class, we are grouping materials according to their properties. and explaining the uses of different materials and comparing and sorting them.

Please see attached our Wider Curriculum Learning Matrix for Terms 3 and 4 that contains optional activities and also my letter to parents/carers explaining what we are covering during the Spring Term.
