Term 2 Week 6

What we are learning in Lilac Class for the week beginning 4.12.23

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 4.12.23

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are ordering fractions less than 1 with the same denominator. We are moving onto comparing and ordering fractions greater than 1.  This will involve recognising mixed numbers and improper fractions and converting them when writing mathematical statements.  We will then be learning about adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator using bar models to support our calculations.  We will then be finding out how to add fractions within 1 with different denominators.

In English this week in Lilac Class, we are finishing our drafting of our piece of extended writing entitled ‘Come to Belize!’ We are using our persuasive language and boxing up of ideas as a framework for our writing.  We have watched travel site videos and read information on travel websites about visiting Belize on holiday and why you should visit it. As a whole class, we have ‘Magpied’ language used and brainstormed phrases and words that are examples of persuasive writing.  For example, holidaymakers can visit the lost cities of the Ancient Mayans, explore the tropical rainforests and swim in the Great Blue Hole. For our Whole Class Guided Reading our text is ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C.S. Lewis and we are reading Chapter 13 and 14 this week.  We are particularly developing our inference skills.  What is the Witch preparing Edmund for?  Why do you think Aslan says there is no need to talk to Edmund about things past? Why does the Witch refer to Aslan as a fool?

In RE, we are finishing off our work that considers what a Messiah would think of our world today.  If God sent another messenger to Earth today what would he say about our world and how would our world respond to him?  We will then be re-visiting our Big Question ‘Was Jesus the Messiah?’ drawing on the knowledge we have gathered throughout this unit.  What does the Messiah mean?  What examples from the texts that we studied are evidence that Jesus was to be the Messiah?  For Time and Place, Lilac Class are examining maps this week and are locating major cities in North America and the countries and the capitals in South America.  We are also finding out where Belize is in relation to these continents.

For Science in Lilac Class, we will be conducting an experiment about friction and will test how a surface of a ramp can affect the speed of a toy car rolling down it.  In Art, we are using our sketches of a whole pepper as a basis for creating a drawing in the style of Yayoi Kusama using coloured pastels.
