Term 2 Week 5

What we are learning in Lilac Class for the week beginning 27.11.23

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 27.11.23

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are continuing with our work on equivalent fractions.  By using pictorial representation, we will show how fractions are equivalent.  Lilac Class are exploring how the numerator and denominator have been divided and/or multiplied by a number when calculating and identifying equivalent fractions. Lilac Class will then learn that an improper fraction is where the numerator is larger than the denominator and a mixed number is made up of an integer and a proper fraction.  We will be using diagrams to support converting an improper fraction to a mixed number.

In English this week in Lilac Class, we are continuing with our new piece of extended writing entitled ‘Come to Belize!’ This week we are now ready to draft our piece of persuasive writing.  We have watched travel site videos and read information on travel websites about visiting Belize on holiday and why you should visit it. As a whole class, we have ‘Magpied’ language used and brainstormed phrases and words that are examples of persuasive writing.  For example, holidaymakers can visit the lost cities of the Ancient Mayans, explore the tropical rainforests and swim in the Great Blue Hole. For our Whole Class Guided Reading our text is ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C.S. Lewis; we are reading Chapter 12 this week.  We are exploring the reader’s first impression of Aslan and how the children initially respond to him.  We will also be thinking about how C.S. Lewis creates tension in this chapter.

In RE, we are considering what a Messiah would think of our world today.  If God sent another messenger to Earth today,  what would he say about our world and how would our world respond to him?  For Time and Place, we are exploring Mayan writing.  What did the Mayan writing system consist of and how were words constructed?  Lilac Class will be learning about codices where we will be finding out what they were and how they were made.

For Science in Lilac Class, we will be conducting an experiment about friction and will test how the surface of a ramp can affect the speed of a toy car rolling down it.  In Art, we are drawing from observation using soft pencil.  Lilac Class are drawing a whole pepper and then repeating the drawing in the style of Yayoi Kusama using coloured pastels.
