Term 1 Week 4

What we are learning in Lilac Class for the week beginning 25.9.23

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 25.9.23

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are continuing with our work about rounding numbers to the nearest 10,100, 1,000 and 100,000.  We will then build on this knowledge and move onto rounding numbers within 1,000,000 considering such questions as ‘which multiples of 100,000 does the number lie between?’ and ‘What is the number rounded to the nearest 100,000?   We need to look carefully at the correct column on the place value chart when making decisions about rounding.

In English this week, we are continuing with the diary account of a Conquistador in 1519 trudging through the tropical rainforest of Mesoamerica in search of gold and glory.  Lilac Class will be writing about what they hear, see, smell and feel and describing their journey sailing across the Atlantic Ocean.  We will then be considering what questions are going through their mind when they find the gigantic abandoned ruins.  We are drawing on our Hot Seating and Role Play activities as a basis for our writing.  For our Whole Class Guided Reading our text is ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C.S. Lewis and we are reading Chapter Four this week.  Lilac Class are focusing on their inference skills, looking beyond the actual text and thinking about why the Queen believes Edmund is an idiot and why she wants him to bring his siblings.  We are also exploring why Edmund does not want to go and get his siblings and bring them to the Queen.

In RE this week, Lilac Class are drawing on the ideas we considered during our discussion with Father John of texts from the Bible about God.  We will be looking again at our key vocabulary and what extracts from these texts are about these particular words.

For our Time and Place topic entitled ‘The Ancient Mayan Civilisation’ Lilac Class are continuing with examining photographs of artefacts that were found in the ancient Mayan ruins.  We will be thinking about what these may be and what they could have been used for and who may have used them. Lilac Class are taking on the role of archaeologists.

For Science in Lilac Class, Lilac Class are learning about the Geocentric and Heliocentric theories.  We will be exploring the differences between these scientific models about the Earth, Sun, Moon and the Planets of the Solar System.  For Music, Lilac Class will be composing ‘Moonscapes’.  We will be working in groups and will record our ideas in the form of a graphic score.  Lilac Class will be using a range of dynamics that we heard when listening to Gustav Holst’s Venus and Mars from The Planets Suite.  We will be performing our compositions to one another and as a class we will be discussing the structure and dynamics used.
