Term 6 Week 4

What we are doing in Lilac Class for the week beginning 26.6.23

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 26.6.23

For Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are exploring regular and irregular polygons.  We will find out that a regular polygon has sides that are the same length and angles that are equal.  We will then be moving onto identifying 3-D shapes, including cubes and other cuboids and identifying the differences between 3-D shapes in relation to how many faces, edges and vertices they have. In Lilac Class we will then start our new unit of learning entitled ‘Position and Direction’.  We will begin this by reading and plotting coordinates, highlighting the importance of reading and plotting the x-axis first.  This will be followed by us solving problems with coordinates where we will be working out the missing coordinates.

In English this week in Lilac Class, we are starting to draft a ‘Conscience Alley’ in the role of Shackleton.  We are writing an argument at the point where Shackleton leaves Elephant Island forming an opinion about whether or not Shackleton made the right decision.  Lilac Class will be exploring their personal opinion about whether Shackleton should stay on Elephant Island with his sick and weak men or leave to attempt to find help. Lilac Class are writing an argument, giving reasons for their opinion from information from the text

For our Guided Reading text, Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill this week, we are reading pages 55-60. Lilac Class are discussing what the author means when he says the crew ‘were reaching their limit’ and why the men shook each other’s hands when they saw the harbour.  We will be also exploring the mood conveyed in the text and summarising it in less than 15 words.  For RE in Lilac Class, we are learning more about Zakah, the third Pillar of Islam.  This involves Muslim’s (if they can afford it) donating 2.5% of their income to charity.  We will also be find out about other things that Muslim do for charity and helping those in need. Lilac Class will be considering who is generous to them and to whom they are generous.  How can being generous make a difference and how could you be generous?  How does being generous make you feel?  For Time and Place in Lilac Class, we are continuing with our learning about how different types of mountains are formed: fold mountains, fault-block mountains, volcanic mountains, dome mountains and plateau mountains.  We will be then exploring a map of India to locate where mountains ranges are located and finding out what type of mountains they are.  For Science in Lilac Class, we are comparing the similarities and differences between the life cycles of plants, mammals, birds, amphibians and insects.  For Design and the Arts, we are using charcoal as a new medium to work with.  We are focusing on close observation drawing of the cross section of cauliflowers and cabbages.
