Term 6 Week 3

What we are doing in Lilac Class for the week beginning 19.6.23

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 19.6.23

For Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are finishing off our work about calculating angles on a straight line finding out strategies to work out the missing angles.  Do we need to add, subtract or divide?  Our knowledge of how many degrees are in a quarter, half, three quarters and full turn will help us.  Lilac Class are then exploring regular and irregular polygons.  We will find out that a regular polygon has sides that are the same length and angles that are equal.  We will then be moving onto identifying 3-D shapes, including cubes and other cuboids and identifying the differences between 3-D shapes in relation to how many faces, edges and vertices they have.

In English this week in Lilac Class, we are levelling up and editing our dual narrative writing based on our supplementary text ‘Ice Trap! Shackleton’s Incredible Expedition’ by Meredith Hooper.  We are considering the question ‘What should Shackleton and his men do now that the ship is sinking?’  We will be drawing on our role play work and ‘Hot Seating’ talking when writing about the view point of the men and then the perspective of Ernest Shackleton, their leader.  Why are the men anxious and worried and why do they believe in their leader? What is going on in Ernest Shackleton’s mind at this point?  Does he believe he can succeed and save his men?

For our Guided Reading text, Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill this week, we are reading pages 49-54. Lilac Class are again looking carefully at the illustrations by considering why the boat is so small on the double page picture and why a map of South Georgia was provided.  Our summarising task is to compare the differences between the two parties’ current situations in less than forty words.  For RE in Lilac Class, we are continuing with our learning about the role of the Mosque in the Muslim community.  We are learning about the different features of the Mosque and what you would expect to find inside one.  For Time and Place in Lilac Class, we are continuing with our learning about how different types of mountains are formed: fold mountains, fault-block mountains, volcanic mountains, dome mountains and plateau mountains.  We will be then exploring a map of India to locate where mountains ranges are located and finding out what type of mountains they are.  For Science in Lilac Class, we are finishing off our work about complete and incomplete metamorphosis and will be comparing the life cycles of the butterfly and the dragon fly.  For Design and the Arts, we are writing a self-evaluation of our Seascapes.  We will be answering questions about the methods we used to create our seascapes, how we felt about the materials we worked with and what inspired us to create our designs.  We will also be exploring how we feel about our finished piece of work and what we like about it and what we would like to improve.  In Music we are listening to Vaughan William’s ‘Lark Ascending’.  What dynamics and instruments can we hear?  How does the music make us feel and why?  What images come into your mind when you hear the music?
