Term 5 Week 6

What we are doing in Lilac Class for the week beginning 22.5.23

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 22.5.23

For Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are estimating the area of shapes and thinking about which areas are easiest to estimate.  We will then be moving onto our new block of learning entitled ‘Statistics’.  This week we will be drawing line graphs and learning about what the X and Y axis on a graph represent.  We will then be reading and interpreting line graphs.  What information is being presented on the line graph?  What lines can you draw to help read the graph?

In English this week in Lilac Class, we are levelling up and writing up in best copy our newspaper article about the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.  We will be looking carefully at newspaper paper articles that were written straight after the disaster and how they were set out and presented.

For our Guided Reading text, Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill this week, we are reading pages 31-36. We are using our inference skills to think about why Shackleton needed to review his plans to evacuate and why he remained positive in front of his crew.  We will also be explaining how the author makes the demise of the Endurance sad.

For RE in Lilac Class, we are finishing off our work about the Story of Bilal where we are thinking about what we would stand up for and why and what is important to us in our life.  For Time and Place in Lilac Class, we are finding out what rivers are used for, for example, farming, transport, energy and as habitats for wildlife.  We will then be exploring the cause of river pollution and the effects on the environment.  Lilac Class will be writing a speech about river pollution at both a global and local level.  Why does pollution occur?  What proposals could be made to ensure river pollution is reduced?  For Science in Lilac Class, we are finishing off our work about comparing the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds.  We are thinking about the similarities and differences between these different animal groups.  We will also be observing how our broad bean plants (asexual reproduction) and geranium plants (artificial asexual reproduction) are growing.  For Design and the Arts, we are continuing with our seascapes using a range of different materials to create a variety of effects and textures.

As it is Half Term next week I am not setting any Home Learning however I am attaching our Wider Curriculum Learning Matrix containing optional activities for your child to work through.
