Term 4 Week 1

What we are doing in Lilac Class for the week beginning 20.2.23

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 20.2.23

For Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are using formal written methods and efficient mental strategies to solve problems.  We will then move onto to solving short division calculations using the formal written method alongside part-whole models, place value models and place value counters.  Lilac Class will then move onto using place value charts and counters so we can associate the remainder with the amount ‘left over’ when we are dividing with remainders.

In English this week in Lilac Class, we are finishing our plans of a description of a workhouse using our Street Child text, other texts, BBC documentaries and photographs for stimulus and ideas.  We will then be drafting our descriptions written in the first person from the perspective of someone who is living in the workhouse during the Victorian period.

For Whole Class Guided Reading Lilac Class are reading Chapters 8, 9 and 10 of Berlie Doherty’s ‘Street Child’ entitled ‘The Carpet-Beaters’. ‘The Jaw of the Iron Dog’ and ‘Lame Betsy’.  Examples of our inference questions, where we read between the lines are: ‘Find and copy a sentence which shows Jim was not sure how to escape’, ‘How do you think Jim felt when he saw the fountain?’ and ‘Why do you think the woman gave him some stew?’

For RE in Lilac Class we are starting our new unit of learning entitled ‘Salvation’.  This week we are answering our Big Question ‘What did Jesus do to save Human beings?’ as formative assessment.  For Time and Place, Lilac Class are continuing to find out about what the main inventions of the Victorian period were and how they have shaped our lives today.  For Science in Lilac Class, we are finding out what conditions cause more solid to dissolve.  Our questions we are exploring are ‘How does the temperature of the water affect the amount of solid that dissolves in water? and ‘How does stirring the water affect the amount of solid that dissolves in water?’  For Design and the Arts, we are starting to learn about William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement.  We will be creating wall paper using polyprint tiles based on the designs of William Morris.  This week we are creating a repeated patten based on the theme of nature.
