Term 2 Week 6

What we are doing in Lilac Class for the week beginning 5.12.22

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 5.12.22

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are continuing with our work about equivalent fractions.  By using pictorial representation, we will show how fractions are equivalent.  Lilac Class are exploring how the numerator and denominator have been divided and/or multiplied by a number when calculating and identifying equivalent fractions. Lilac Class will then learn that an improper fraction is where the numerator is larger than the denominator and a mixed number is made up of an integer and a proper fraction.  We will be using diagrams to support converting an improper fraction to a mixed number.

In English this week in Lilac Class, we are drafting an argument in the form of a letter. We will be writing to the Prime Minister of Belize about environmental issues and some endangered species living in Belize, for example the Mesoamerican River Turtle, the Bromeliad Tree Frog, the Brown Pelican and the Ocellated Turkey.  What can his country do to save these animals?

For our Whole Class Guided Reading we are reading Chapters 14 and 15 this week of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.  We are thinking about authorial effect this week by explaining how C.S Lewis builds the tragedy in the text.  Lilac Class are answering such questions as ‘Why do the girls follow Aslan without a word?’ and ‘Why do you think the Witch refers to Aslan as a fool?’

In RE, we are re-visiting our Big Question ‘Was Jesus the Messiah?’ drawing on the knowledge we have gathered throughout this unit.  What does the Messiah mean?  What examples from the texts that we studied are evidence that Jesus was to be the Messiah?

For Time and Place, we are continuing with finding out what food the Mayans ate and why certain foods were significant and important to them.  For Science in Lilac Class, we are writing up an evaluation and conclusion of our investigation about what affects the speed of a car rolling down a ramp and will be drawing on our knowledge of friction.  How could we have extended the scope of our experiment?  What different controlled and independent variable could we have?  How could we have made our investigation fairer?  In Art, we are continuing with our close observation work using soft pencils and pastels to draw peppers and corn on the cob (food ate by the Mayans).

There will be no Homework for the last week or term or for the Christmas Holiday.  However, there will be the rest of our e-book ‘The Time-Lock Adventure’ on Purple Mash to read.  I will also attach our Learning Curriculum Matrix with optional activities that your child might want to do over the holiday.
