Term 2 Week 5

What we are doing in Lilac Class for the week beginning 28.11.22

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 28.11.22

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are continuing with our work on dividing whole numbers by 10, 100 and 1,000.  We will find out that dividing by 10 twice is the same as dividing by 100 and that dividing by 10 3 times is the same as dividing by 1,000. We are learning that multiplication and division are the inverse operations.  We will also be calculating multiples of 10, 100 and 1,000 using knowledge of factors to break a calculation down.  Lilac Class will be using the commutative law – you can find the answer to a multiplication calculation by multiplying the factors in either order.  We will also start our new block of learning entitled ‘Fractions’.  Lilac Class will initially cover work about equivalent fractions finding out the value of missing numerators and denominators using our knowledge of division and multiplication.

In English this week in Lilac Class, we are writing up our piece of extended writing entitled ‘Come to Belize!’ as a final ’best copy’.  We have been busy levelling up and improving our drafts of our travel articles.  For our Whole Class Guided Reading our text is ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C.S. Lewis and we are reading Chapters 12 and 13 this week.  We will be answering such questions as the following to develop our inference skills: Find words and phrases that show the children’s appreciation of the change in season’, ‘What might ‘royal, solemn, overwhelming eyes’ suggest about Aslan?’ and ‘What is your first impression of Aslan?  Why?’

In RE, we are finishing off our work about what the Messiah would think of our world today and what he would think was positive and negative and why. What might he not like and not stand for?  How might he use the internet?  What might he teach us?  What might he be pleased to see?

For Time and Place, we are finding out what food the Mayans ate and why certain foods were significant and important to them.  For Science in Lilac Class, we are investigating what affects the speed of a car rolling down a ramp and will be drawing on our knowledge of friction.  We will be conducting an experiment to find out how the surface and height of a ramp affects the speed.   In Art, will be using soft pencils and pastels to draw peppers and corn on the cob (food ate by the Mayans) developing our close observation skills.
