What we are doing in Lilac Class for the week beginning 19.9.22.

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 19.9.22

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are comparing and ordering numbers to 100,000 and 1,000,000.  We are thinking about such questions as which digit has the greatest value?  What is the value of each digit and when comparing two numbers with the same number of digits, if their first digits are equal in value, what do you look at next?  We will then be moving onto rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 or 1,000 and recognising multiples of 10, 100 and 1,000.

In English this week, we are writing a diary account of a Conquistador in 1519 trudging through the tropical rainforest of Mesoamerica in search of gold and glory.  Lilac Class will be writing about what they hear, see, smell and feel and describing their journey sailing across the Atlantic Ocean.  We will then be considering what questions are going through their mind when they find the gigantic abandoned ruins? Before we start are writing, we will be ‘Hot Seating’ talking about what our experience has been like.  For our Whole Class Guided Reading our text is ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ and we are reading Chapter Three this week.  Lilac Class are going to be developing their inference skills answering questions that are not obvious in the text.  For example, ‘Why is Lucy initially confused in this chapter?’, ‘How can we first tell that Edmund is in Narnia?’ and ‘Why is the Queen annoyed?’

In RE this week, Father John will be leading the session about what the Bible says about God.  Lilac Class are exploring in depth texts from the Bible focusing on key vocabulary.  We will be thinking about what specific parts of the texts mean and are telling us about God.

For our Time and Place topic entitled ‘The Ancient Mayan Civilisation’ Lilac Class are examining photographs of artefacts that were found in the ancient Mayan ruins.  We will be thinking about what these may be and what they could have been used for and who may have used them. Lilac Class are taking on the role of archaeologists.

For Science in Lilac Class, we are continuing describing the movement of the planets relative to the Sun.  Lilac Class are finding out what planets are in the Solar System, how large they are and their position in relation to the Sun.  In Music, we will be refining our graphic scores that represent ‘Mars’ and ‘Venus’ from Gustav Holst’s ‘The Planets Suite’.  Lilac Class will be thinking about the different dynamics and instruments that are used and how they covey the meaning of the music.  We will be also using graphic notation to record musical ideas.
