Term 5 Week 5

What we are doing in Lilac Class for the wb.4.7.22

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

WB: 4.7.22

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are adding and subtracting decimals where the decimals places are not the same.  This will be building on the work we have previously covered when we added and subtracted decimals with the same decimal places.  It is crucial that decimals points are lined are correctly and that the 0 place holder is used.  This is particularly important when we are subtracting decimals.  In English this week, we are writing a short biography about the life of Sir Ernest Shackleton.  Lilac Class will be learning about the features of a biographical text, for example writing an introduction that summarises the main events of the person’s life and making the audience want to read on and making sure that events are written in chronological order.  The conclusion should refer to why the person you are writing about will be remembered.  We are now coming to the end of Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill, our Whole Class Guided Reading text. Again, inference skills are our main skill focus.  For example, answering the questions ‘Why do you think the crew chose to honour August the 30th for the rest of their lives?’, ‘Why was it against the odds to lose none of the crew?’ and ‘Do you think Shackleton failed?’

In RE this week, we are finishing our work about Hajj and why it is important for Muslims.  We are learning about the different stages of Hajj and exploring the meaning of pilgrimage and the rite of passage.  Hajj brings millions of Muslims from different races together into one religious community and pilgrims say it is like coming home.

For our Time and Place topic entitled ‘Life on Earth’ we are continuing our work about natural resources and why Great Britain colonised India. We will be learning about the natural resources that can be found in India and these are minerals, coal, iron ore and cotton to name but a few. For Science in Lilac Class, we are comparing the sexual reproduction of different animals and on Thursday July 7th we are going on our Hastings trip to the Blue Reef Aquarium. We will be given a talk and tour from a marine life expert! Lilac Class will be finding out about many different types of marine life, their characteristics, habitats, how they reproduce and where in the world you will find them.
