Term 6 Week 4

What we are doing in Lilac Class for the wb. 27.6.22

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

WB: 28.6.22

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are partitioning decimals to make complements to 1 using part-whole models.  Lilac Class will then use their skills to support their thinking when crossing the whole.  We will be answering such questions as: ‘What happens when we have 10 in a place value column?’  ‘How do you decide what number to partition?’. Lilac Class will then move onto adding numbers with the same decimal places.

In English this week, we are continuing with writing a ‘Conscience Alley’ in the role of Ernest Shackleton.  Lilac class will be reading our supplementary text by Meredith Hooper about the expedition entitled Ice Trap! Shackleton’s Incredible Expedition.  We are writing a ‘Conscience Alley’ where we are exploring what Shackleton’s state of mind might have been at the point where he leaves Elephant Island.  We are forming an opinion about whether Shackleton made the right decision to leave his men and find help and what dilemmas he may have experienced.   In Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill, our Whole Class Guided Reading text, we are using our inference skills to work out what the reader’s first impression of Mr Sorlle is and why and exploring the reasons behind the men shaking each other’s hands when they saw the harbour.

In RE this week, we are learning about Hajj and why it is important for Muslims.  We will be learning about the different stages of Hajj and finding about the meaning of pilgrimage.   Hajj brings millions of Muslims from different races together into one religious community and pilgrims say it is like coming home.

For our Time and Place topic entitled ‘Life on Earth’ we are finding out about natural resources and why Great Britain colonised India.  We will be learning about the natural resources that can be found in India and these are minerals, coal, iron ore and cotton to name but a few. For Science in Lilac Class, we are writing about our wildlife walk when we went to Hilbert Park last week where we did a mini nature study of our local environment. In Art, we will be finishing off our sketches of the park.
