Term 6 Week 2

What we are doing in Lilac Class for the wb. 13.6.22

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

WB: 13.6.22

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are exploring the relationship between decimals, fractions and percentages.  We will begin by understanding percentages and that ‘per cent’ relates to the ‘number of parts per hundred’ using the % symbol.  We will then be learning about percentages as fractions using the denominator 100 and making connections to decimals and hundredths.

In English this week, we are continuing with our writing about Ernest Shackleton and Endurance.  Lilac class will be reading another text written by Meredith Hooper about the expedition entitled Ice Trap! Shackleton’s Incredible Expedition.  We are writing a ‘Conscience Alley’ where we are exploring what Shackleton’s state of mind might have been at the point where he leaves Elephant Island.  We are forming an opinion about whether Shackleton made the right decision to leave his men and find help and what dilemmas he may have experienced.   In Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill, our Whole Class Guided Reading text, we are again using our inference skills and digging deep within the text by answering such questions as: ‘Was McNeish’s work important and why?’, ‘Why was the crew’s condition deteriorating?’ and ‘What makes Cape Horn so dangerous?’

In RE this week, we are learning about why Zakah is important to Muslims and exploring the importance of generosity in our lives and who is generous to us and to whom we are generous to.  We will also be finding out about the work of Islam Relief.

For our Time and Place topic entitled ‘Life on Earth’ we are this week continuing with our work about the climates found in the different regions in India and the key aspects of climate zones.  We are also finding out about monsoons and why they occur.  For Science in Lilac Class, we are continuing with our work about the naturalist and animal behaviourist Jane Goodall and the work of David Attenborough.   We are also (weather permitting) visiting Hilbert Park for a wildlife walk.  We will be looking out for different wildlife and their habitats and be doing some tree identification based on their leaves and bark rubbings.  In Music, we will be practising our songs for the Tunbridge Wells Singing Festival to be held on Tuesday 21st June at the Tunbridge Wells Assembly Halls. Please remember to purchase tickets (if you have not already done so) from the Assembly Hall’s website.  Information via the school office has gone out about this.
