What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

WB: 9.5.22

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are subtracting fractions with different denominators, where one denominator is a multiple of another.  We will be using bar models and number lines.  We will then be subtracting mixed numbers using partitioning method. Lilac class will be then moving onto multiplying fractions by whole numbers using bar models and number lines to show repeated addition.  

In English this week, we are starting to plan our newspaper article about the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. We will be looking at examples of real newspaper articles of the time and how they are structured and organised  In Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill, our Whole Class Guided Reading text, we will be thinking about how the illustrations add to the meaning of the text and how the author, William Gill makes the reader feel sympathy for the crew of Endurance.     

In RE this week, we are learning about Shahadah, the prayer that Muslim’s say and finding out why it is important to them.  WE will be thinking about the connections between the Shahadah and Muslim beliefs about Allah and the Prophet Muhammad.

For our Time and Place topic entitled ‘Life on Earth’, we will be learning about why rivers play such a vital role in the water cycle and finding about the journey of a river.  Lilac Class will be learning about the course of a river and how they erode, transport and deposit materials. For Science, Lilac Class are learning about the sexual reproduction in some animals, including reptiles and fish. and artificially.  We will also be looking carefully at our broad beans plants that we are growing from a broad bean.  Lilac Class are also growing a geranium from a cutting and also growing broad bean plants from a broad bean.  In Music, we will be practising our songs for the Tunbridge Wells Singing Festival to be held on Tuesday 21^st June at the Tunbridge Wells Assembly Halls.  We will be composing in groups creating our own ‘Musical Seascapes’ using a range of pitched and unpitched percussion instruments. We will be thinking about how the music we have previously listened to describes the sea.  In Art, we are continuing with our Seascapes, thinking about the colours and materials that we want to use.
