What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are adding fractions within 1 and adding 3 or more fractions.  We will be continuing to use bar models and pictorial representations to support our written calculations.  Lilac Class are then moving onto adding mixed numbers using partitioning and also a  method where the mixed numbers are converted into improper fractions.

In English this week, we are writing up our sea poems in best copy and will then start our newspaper article about the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. This week Lilac Class are finding out about the events of the tragedy.  In Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill, our Whole Class Guided Reading text, our focus is inference.  Why did Shackleton get rid of some of his crew?  Why do you think it took a month to make final preparations?

In RE this week, we are finishing off our work about what Muslims believe about Allah and the Prophet Muhammad.  We will be learning about the concept of ‘Tawhid’ which means oneness and some of the 99 different names for Allah.

For our Time and Place topic entitled ‘Life on Earth’, we will be learning about why rivers play such a vital role in the water cycle and finding about the journey of a river.  Lilac Class will be labelling the main features of a river and learning some facts about the River Severn.  For Science, Lilac Class are finding out how plants can reproduce asexually - naturally and artificially.  We will be growing a geranium from a cutting and also growing broad bean plants from a broad bean.  In Music, we will be practising our songs for the Tunbridge Wells Singing Festival to be held on Tuesday 21st June at the Tunbridge Wells Assembly Halls.  We will also be listening to Debussy’s ‘La Mer’. In Art, we are continuing with our Seascapes, thinking about the colours and materials that we want to use.
