Term 4 Week 6- Music

Group compositions using ostinato patterns

In Music, Lilac Class have been learning about rhythm and pulse.  We listened to 'Ciaconna' by the Italian Baroque composer Tarquinio Merula who lived from 1595 until 1665.  In his composition we could hear a repeated pattern played by the viol (an instrument that looks very much like a 'cello).  In groups, we then created our own compositions that contained a repeated melodic pattern called an ostinato pattern.  This was played on either a xylophone, metallophone or glockenspiel.  We then embellished this melody with unpitched percussion instruments that maintained the pulse throughout.  After our practise session each group performed to the class.
