What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

For Maths in Lilac Class this week, we are continuing with our work about reading and interpreting tables to extract information and answer questions.  We will be encouraged to generate questions about information in a table.  We then move onto reading a range of two-way tables.  These tables show two different sets of data which are displayed horizontally and vertically. 

For English this week, we are planning a piece of persuasive writing.  Lilac class are writing a travel article for either a website or travel brochure about visiting Belize on holiday.  We will be looking at a selection of travel websites and learning about the beautiful beaches, the Great Blue Hole, rainforest and Mayan tours and the Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Centre. Our task is to focus on what persuasive phrases and words are used to make us want to pack our suitcase and fly off to Belize for a super holiday!

In Lilac Class we are coming to the end of our Guided Reading text, ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S Lewis’. We will be reading Chapters 13 and 14 this week.  Lilac Class are examining Aslan’s character and will be discussing in some depth the question ‘Why do you think Aslan says there is no need to talk to Edmund about things past? We are also exploring how C.S. Lewis builds the tragedy in Chapter 14. 

In RE this week, we are considering what a Messiah would say about the world today.  What would he not stand for?  What would he use the internet for?  How would he be different from the previous Messiah?  How would people treat him?  What might a Messiah be pleased to see?  If time we will also be revisiting our ‘Big Question’ ‘Was Jesus the Messiah?

In Science this week, we are conducting an experiment about measuring gravity. Using scales and Newton Meters we are measuring the weight and mass of different objects.  We are answering questions such as ‘Do you think there will be a link between the weight and mass of each subject?  Did you notice a link between weight and mass of each object? Explain how gravity gives objects their weight.  In ICT this week we continuing with our work about spreadsheets and recording information.  In Topic, we are answering the question ‘Why did the Mayan Civilisation decline?’  Some Mayans continued living on small farming settlements when the great cities declined.  We will be preparing an interview with a Mayan farmer asking what happened to the cities and why?  We will be considering the different theories as to why there was a decline.  In DT we are making models of Mayan people using split pins and card.  We are looking carefully at paintings of Mayan people.  What colours were their clothes?  What were their clothes like?  Did they wear headdresses and jewellery?  In Music, we are creating a best copy of a ‘Moonscape’ graphic score. using graphic notation and musical symbols.
