Term 2 Week 5

What we are doing in Lilac Class for the wb. 29.11.21

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

WB: 29.11.21

For Maths in Lilac Class this week, we are using our knowledge of scales and coordinates to represent data in a line graph.  Lilac Class are drawing axes with different scales depending on the data we are representing.  We will then be moving onto reading tables to extract information and answer questions.  We will be encouraged to generate questions about information in a table.

For English this week, we are levelling up our draft of a non-chronological report about a tropical rainforest. Our focus is to organise and categorise information and to use sub-headings effectively.  We will need to use factual and technical language and write in the third person to ensure our report sounds formal and impersonal. In Lilac Class we are referring to a checklist to make sure we have included all the essential features of report writing.

Our Whole Class Guided Reading text this term is ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C.S. Lewis. We are reading Chapter Twelve this week where we are exploring our first impression of Aslan and how C.S. Lewis creates tension in this chapter. What vocabulary does he used?  How are the characters behaving?  What impact does the setting have on how the reader feels?

In RE this week, we are finishing off our detailed analysis of the texts from the Bible - ‘The Birth of Jesus: Matthew Chapter 1’ and ‘The Wise Men:  Matthew Chapter 2’.  To enrich our understanding, by digging deeper, Lilac Class are going to draw on the ideas from the discussion that arose from the input given by Father John.  He unpacked these texts and the meaning of ‘Messiah.’ and ‘Incarnation’ where the class were involved in a question and answer session.

In Science this week, we are learning about the difference between mass and gravity that will lead on to us carrying out another experiment next week.  We are considering questions such as ‘What is gravity?’  ‘Why is weight lighter if you went to the moon?’ ‘Do gravity and weight stay the same?  Why?’ In ICT this week we continuing with our work about spreadsheets and the conversion of measurements.  We are finishing off our Mayan calendars, decorating them in the style of actual Mayan calendars that have been discovered in the pyramids and palaces of Mesoamerica.  In DT we are making models of Mayan people using split pins and card.  We are looking carefully at paintings of Mayan people.  What colours were their clothes?  What were their clothes like?  Did they wear headdresses and jewellery?  In Music, we are continuing with our ‘Moonscapes’ using a wide range of pitched and unpitched percussion instruments.  We will be recording our musical ideas using graphic notation and musical symbols.
