What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

WB: 11.1.21

For Maths in Lilac Class this week, we will be continuing with our work about subtracting two 4-digit numbers where there is more than one exchange.  Lilac Class will be using place value counters to model the exchange and matching this with the written column method.  We will then build on our understanding of estimating and rounding to estimate answers for calculations and problems. 

For English this week, we are drafting our space poems using our ideas from our brainstorming session just before half term where we created mind maps.  Our poetry writing has been  inspired by Pie Corbett’s ‘Six Ways to Look at the Moon and Space Staring’ and space poems by other children’s poets.  Lilac Class have been ‘Magpies’ taking and using words and phrases that we particularly like that poets have used in their own work as inspiration for our own.  As well as looking at different ways a poem can be structured, Lilac Class are also learning about the conventions of poetry writing such as the use of metaphors, similes, alliteration and onomatopoeic words.  

Our Whole Class Guided Reading text this term is ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C.S. Lewis.  We are reading Chapter Eight and will be thinking about why Lucy is nervous about meeting Aslan and using our comprehension skills to summarise the events of this chapter in less than 30 words. 

In RE this week, we are starting our new unit of learning entitled ‘Incarnation’.  Our first task is to explore our new Big Question ‘Was Jesus the Messiah?’  We will be considering why people thought Jesus was the Messiah and why. 

In Science this week, we are learning about how day and night occur and will be explaining what happens to the Sun and the Earth during the course of the day.  In ICT this week, we are continuing with our block of learning entitled ‘Coding’.  The children will be reviewing coding vocabulary and will use a design to create a program. In Topic, Lilac Class are learning about the Mayan Story of Creation and why maize had religious significance to the Ancient Mayan Civilisation.  In Art, we are looking at Mayan poetry and will use these artefacts when creating our own designs that will lead to us making our own Mayan pottery.
