Term 1 Week 4

What we are doing in Lilac Class for the wb. 27.9.21

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

WB: 27.9.21

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are counting forwards and backwards in powers of 10 up to 1,000,000.  We will be comparing and completing sequences that both increase and decrease.  We will then be comparing and ordering numbers up to 1,000,000 using comparison vocabulary and symbols. Lilac Class will then move onto rounding numbers within a million.

For English this week, we are using our role play drama activity as a platform for our next piece of extended writing that is a diary account.  Lilac Class are drafting their accounts this week.  We are imagining that we are the Conquistador Hernán Cortés who is writing a diary entry about his experience of trudging through the tropical rainforest of Mesoamerica with his men and then discovers some gigantic ancient ruins.  Our focus is to use the features of diary writing such as writing in the first person and in the past tense referring to emotions and feelings, writing events in chronological order and using fronted time adverbials.

Our Whole Class Guided Reading text this term is ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C.S. Lewis.  We are reading Chapter Four and our main focus is to explore Edmund’s character and his initial relationship with the Queen of Narnia.  We will be explaining what tactics the Queen used to get Edmund to side with her.

In RE this week, we will be examining texts from the Bible to find out what the Bible says about God.  We will be highlighting important phrases that are referring to our key vocabulary.  What is God like?  What does God do?  What does God not do?

In Science this week, we are researching the definitions of key words linked to the Sun, Earth and Moon, for example, corona, solar flare, atmosphere, crater and plains.  We will then be exploring the Sun in more depth and finding out about how far away it is from the Earth, what it is made of and how big it is.  In ICT this week, we are continuing with our block of learning entitled ‘Coding’.  The children will be reviewing coding vocabulary and will use a design to create a program. In Topic, Lilac Class will finish examining photographs of original Mayan artefacts found in the ancient ruins.  What were they used for and what do they tell us about how the Ancient Mayan civilisation lived their lives?  In Art, we are continuing with our Mayan artwork based on original designs using the techniques of the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.

I have also attached the Wider Curriculum Matrix for Lilac Class this term.  The activities are optional.  I would love to see anything that you do at home so that we can share them with the class.
