Term 6 Week 6

What Lilac Class are doing for the WB. 12.7.21

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

WB: 12.7.21

In Maths in Lilac Class, we are exploring the relationship between percentages, fractions and decimals.  Percentages are represented as fractions using the denominator 100 and we are making connections to decimals and hundredths.  Lilac Class will recognise that percentages, decimals and fractions are different ways of expressing proportions and will use pictorial representations to demonstrate this.  The class are also recognising simple equivalent fractions and will show them as decimals and percentages using a range of representations including bar models and number lines.

For English this week, we are finishing off our writing of an information leaflet entitled ‘Save Henderson Island!’ using persuasive writing and expanded noun phrases.  We are using our explanatory report and embellishing it with powerful language.  The purpose of this piece of writing is to grab the reader’s attention and create empathy for the marine life and wildlife that inhabit the island and the surrounding coastline.

This week for our Whole Class Guided Reading, we are looking at a range of texts that link to our topic ‘Life on Earth’. For example, the picture books ‘Window’ by Jeannie Baker and ‘Flotsdam’ by David Weisner.  We are also going to read a selection of poetry about the natural world, for example, ‘The Lost Words’ by Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane and ‘Under the Moon and Over the Sea’ by Gaby Morgan.  We will also be reading the poem ‘A March Calf’ by Ted Hughes.

In RE, we are studying in more depth the fifth Pillar of Islam, Hajj.  Hajj brings millions of Muslims from different races into one religious community and involves a pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.  We will be learning about the Kaaba and thinking about why people go on a pilgrimage and what it is.

In Science this week, we are going on a nature walk in our local park.  This will involve tree identification by looking at bark and leaves.  We are also going on a ‘nature hunt’ seeing how many different plants, flowers (insect and wind pollinated) insects and animals we can spot.  In Topic, Lilac Class are learning about Indian culture.  We will be finding out about Indian dance and music, architecture, religion and festivals, clothing and cuisine. In DT, we are finishing our information leaflets entitled ‘Save Henderson Island!’ This activity directly links with our English work this week.  In Music, we are continuing with our work about ‘The Lark Ascending’ written by the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams.  We will be drawing the images and pictures that come into our mind when we hear the music.

For Home Learning, I would like you to read all the e-book ‘A Horde of Ravens’ and multi-choice questions set on Purple Mash.  I would also like you to check that you have finished all your My Maths activities I have set you.  Please remember our Year 5 Summer Term Wider Curriculum Home Learning Matrix where there are optional activities.  I have attached it again for this week.
