Term 6 Week 5

What Lilac Class are doing for the WB. 5.7.21

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

WB: 5.7.21

In Maths in Lilac Class, we will be finding out how to round decimals developing our understanding of rounding to the nearest whole number and to the nearest tenth.  We are then ordering and comparing decimals up to three decimal places. Lilac Class are again working with number lines and other forms of pictorial representations to solve and work out our answers.

For English this week, we are writing an information leaflet entitled ‘Save Henderson Island!’ using persuasive writing and expanded noun phrases.  We are using our explanatory report and embellishing it with powerful language.  The purpose of this piece of writing is to grab the reader’s attention and create empathy for the marine life and wildlife that inhabit the island and the surrounding coastline.

This week for our Whole Class Guided Reading of ‘Shackleton’s Journey’ by William Grill we are continuing to answer questions that develop our understanding by retrieving details and quotations from the text to support our answers.  We will also be learning to locate in the text evidence that shows the viewpoint of the author.

In RE, we are studying in more depth the fourth Pillar of Islam, Sawm and learning about Ramadan and Eid ul Fitr.  The questions we are considering are ‘What is it like to give something up (something that you would really miss) for a length of time?’  ‘What is fasting?’ and ‘What do Muslim people learn from fasting during Ramadan?’

In Science this week, we are learning about the pollination process.  This week we are finding about insect pollination and the different stages that take place that lead to a plant being fertilised.  We are learning about the important role that insects play and comparing insect pollinated plants with wind pollinated plants.  In Topic, Lilac Class are continuing with their work about the two important rivers in India the River Ganges with The River Narmada.  We will are learning about the different sacred/religious events that occur on these rivers and what life is like for the people who live on the River Ganges and The River Narmada. We are also considering the problems with the two rivers, such as pollution. In DT, we are designing information leaflets entitled ‘Save Henderson Island!’. This activity directly links with our English work this week.  We will be looking at a selection of information leaflets and the way they are set out and presented.  In Music, we are listening to ‘The Lark Ascending’ written by the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams.  We will be drawing the images and pictures that come into our mind when we hear the music.
