Term 6 Week 4

What Lilac Class are doing for the WB. 28.6.21

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

WB: 28.6.21

This week will be a very busy week for Lilac Class.  Firstly, it is Assessment Week where we are looking at the progress we have made since last March. In Maths, we are continuing to learn about the relationship between fractions and decimals and converting and exchanging thousandths from a decimal to a fraction and vice versa.  We will also be finding out how to round decimals developing our understanding of rounding to the nearest whole number and to the nearest tenth.  We are working with number lines and other forms of pictorial representations to solve and work out our answers.

On Monday, ‘Drama Hut’ will be visiting us.  We will be involved in a drama workshop about the Mayans, an ancient civilisation we studied earlier this year.  For English this week, we are levelling up our explanatory reports about Henderson Island in the South Pacific Ocean and finding out why it is called ‘the world’s biggest rubbish dump’.  We will then create an information leaflet entitled ‘Save Henderson Island!’ using persuasive writing and expanded noun phrases.

This week for our Whole Class Guided Reading of ‘Shackleton’s Journey’ by William Grill we are answering questions that develop our understanding by retrieving details and quotations from the text to support our answers.  We will also be learning to locate in the text evidence that shows the viewpoint of the author.

In RE, we are studying in more depth the third Pillar of Islam, Zakah.  It is the compulsory giving of a set proportion of one’s wealth to charity.  Zakah is regarded as a type of self-purification.  Our key questions we are focusing on are the following:  Why do some people think it is a good idea to regularly give away their money to others in the community?  What are some of the best reasons for being generous?  Are the reasons for generosity similar across different religions?  We are also making connections with our own lives by thinking about who is generous to us in our own lives and how we are generous to others.

In Science this week, we are finishing off our work about the functions of the different parts of a plant.  We are finding out what stigma, style, ovary, ovule, anther, filament, stamen, carpel, sepal, receptacle and pollen tube mean and where they can be located.  In Topic, Lilac Class are learning about two important rivers in India and will be comparing the River Ganges with The River Narmada.  We will be learning about the different sacred/religious events that occur on these rivers and what life is like for the people who live on these rivers. We are also considering the problems with the two rivers, such as pollution. In Art, we are going to be designing our own prayer mats based on the themes and patterns that we have identified when looking at a selection of photos of prayer mats and our own prayer mats in the classroom. In Music, relating to our topic ‘Life on Earth’ we are singing ‘To The Sky’ by Carl Strommen and ‘I Can See Clearly Now’ By Johnny Nash. We are now adding instrumental accompaniments.
