What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are exploring the relationship between decimals and fractions by converting fractions into decimals. The class will then move onto more complex decimals numbers.  We will be recording our answers using a variety of pictorial representations. 

For English this week, we are starting a new piece of extended writing.  We are going to be learning about Henderson Island in the South Pacific Ocean and finding out why it is known as ‘the world’s biggest rubbish dump’.  We are going to write a non-chronological report that will lead onto forming the basis of an information leaflet entitled ‘Save Henderson Island’. 

This week for our Whole Class Guided Reading of ‘Shackleton’s Journey’ by William Grill we are developing our inference skills and ‘thinking out of the box’ by exploring certain phrases that the author uses.  For example, ‘the crew were reaching their limit’ and ‘why do you think the men shook each other’s hands when they saw the harbour?’

In RE, we are finding out about the role of the Mosque in the Muslim community.  Our key questions are:  ‘What is important about the Mosque for the Muslim community?’; ‘What are the distinctive features of the Mosque?’; ‘What is their significance and symbolism?’

In Science this week, we are continuing to learn about some of the food chains that can be found in the tropical rainforests of South America.  We are also going to find out what the different parts of a plant are called and what their function is.  We will be finding out what stigma, style, ovary, ovule, anther, filament, stamen, carpel, sepal, receptacle and pollen tube mean and where they can be located.  In Topic, Lilac Class are finding out about the different mountain ranges in India and where they can be found.  We will be learning about the Himalayas, Karakoram, Aravali, Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats and Vindhyas.  In Music, relating to our topic ‘Life on Earth’ we are singing ‘To The Sky’ by Carl Strommen and ‘I Can See Clearly Now’ By Johnny Nash.
