Term 6 Week 2

What Lilac Class are doing for the WB. 14.6.21

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

WB: 14.6.21

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are finishing our work about finding a fraction of an amount and exploring fractions as operators, using pictorial representations.  We will then start our new block of learning – ‘Decimals and Percentages’.  Initially, we will be working with decimals up to 2 decimal places. Using counters, place value grids and part-whole models we will be partitioning decimal numbers in different ways.  Lilac Class are then moving on to investigate the relationship between decimals and fractions

For English this week, we are now going to level up our draft newspaper articles about the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.  We are checking that we have completed our success criteria ‘The Features of a Newspaper Article’ to ensure that we include all the correct content and following carefully our next steps.

This week for our Whole Class Guided Reading of ‘Shackleton’s Journey’ by William Grill we are looking at the impact of the illustrations on the meaning of the text.  We will be answering questions such as ‘Why do you think the boat is so small on the double page picture?’ We will also be exploring the meaning of words such as ‘recuperated’ and ‘ingenious’ by looking at the rest of the sentence to give us clues.  We will be examining how William Grill uses language, for including figurative language (e.g. simile or imagery) and its effects on the reader.

In RE, we are learning in more depth what the Second Pillar of Islam ‘Salah’ means and why it is important to Muslims.  Lilac Class will be finding out how and why Muslim people pray and making connections by exploring what the similarities and differences are between prayer in Islam and in other religions.

In Science this week, we are continuing with designing our own food chains using our key scientific vocabulary we learnt last week.  We will also be learning about some of the food chains that can be found in the tropical rainforests of South America.  In Topic, Lilac Class are finding out about the different climates of India and learning the meanings of ‘highland’, ‘humid sub-tropical’, ‘arid’, ‘semi-arid’, ‘tropical wet’ and ‘tropical wet and dry’. We are also going to learn about the different monsoons that occur in the various regions of India. In Music, relating to our topic ‘Earth and Space’ we are singing ‘To The Sky’ by Carl Strommen and ‘I Can See Clearly Now’ By Johnny Nash.
