What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

WB: 10.5.21

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we will be adding 3 or more fractions, using bar models to support our calculations. We will be developing our knowledge of common denominators. Lilac Class will then start to learn how to add mixed numbers using different methods. Initially by partitioning mixed numbers into fractions and whole numbers and then converting mixed numbers into improper fractions.   

In English, we are now moving onto levelling up our recount based on the sinking of the Titanic and Frederick Fleet’s experience up in crow’s nest just before the iceberg struck. Our job is to ensure that our writing has met the success criteria and to check that we have included the features of writing a recount. 

This week for our Whole Class Guided Reading of ‘Shackleton’s Journey’ by William Grill, we are particularly looking at the illustrations and considering the impact they have on the meaning of the text.  We will also be exploring the feelings of the crew at various points in the story, locating evidence in the text.

In RE, we are continuing with making the connection between The Five Pillars of Islam and our own life.  We are considering the question ‘What pillars do you think you need in your life to hold you up and why?’  We are exploring the help and support that we have had in our life journey so far and recording our ideas as a whole class mind map.

In Science this week, we are finishing our work about complete and incomplete metamorphosis. We will be looking at the life cycles of the butterfly, dragonfly and frogs.  In Topic, we are continuing to learn more facts about rivers and key terms.  We will be thinking about questions such as ‘How does erosion cause changes in the landscape?’  ‘Why does a river slow down as it nears the mouth?’ and ‘How are deltas formed?’  In Art, we still creating a ‘Titanic Frieze’ using paint and collage materials.  In Music, we are listening to more of Benjamin Britten’s ‘Sea Interludes’, developing our knowledge of the instruments of the orchestra. Our task is to think about the different dynamics and instruments we can hear and how the composer has created the sea.
