Term 5 Week 3

What Lilac Class are doing for the WB. 3.5.21

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

WB: 3.5.21

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are continuing with our unit of work about fractions.  We will be adding and subtracting fractions with the same and different denominators using bar models to support our understanding.  When adding fractions within 1 with different denominators we will be using pictorial representations to convert fractions so they have the same denominator.  Lilac class are also be moving onto finding the ‘common denominator’ of three fractions.

In English, we are continuing with our recount based on the sinking of the Titanic.  We have now planned our extended piece of writing, particularly focusing on developing brilliant vocabulary that describes Frederick Fleet’s experience up in crow’s nest just before the iceberg struck.

This week for our Whole Class Guided Reading of ‘Shackleton’s Journey’ by William Grill, we are using our inference and deduction skills, looking beyond the text itself to find our answers. For example, ‘Why do you think it took a month to make preparations?  We have also been deducing our answers from the detailed illustrations in the book.

In RE, we are making the connection between The Five Pillars of Islam and our own life.  We are considering the question ‘What pillars do you think you need in your life to hold you up and why?’  We are exploring the help and support that we have had in our life journey so far.

In Science this week, we are learning about complete and incomplete metamorphosis. We will be looking at the life cycles of the butterfly, dragonfly and frogs.  In Topic, we are continuing with our work about how a river forms and the journey of a river as it travels to the sea. We are learning about the River Severn and key vocabulary such as source, meander, delta, estuary, floodplain, tributary, and confluence.  In Art, we are creating a ‘Titanic Frieze’ using paint and collage materials.  In Music, we will be listening to Benjamin Britten’s ‘Sea Interludes’, developing our knowledge of the instruments of the orchestra. Our task is to think about the different dynamics and instruments we can hear and how the composer has created the sea.
