Term 5 Week 2

What we are doing in Lilac Class for wb. 26.4.21

What we are doing this week in Lilac Class

WB: 26.4.21

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are continuing with our unit of work about fractions.  We will be exploring number sequences and counting up and down in a given fraction.  Children are also finding missing fractions in a sequence and determining whether the sequence is increasing or decreasing and by how much. The children are to then move onto comparing and ordering fractions less and more than 1 by finding a common denominator or a common numerator.  They will be using bar models to support their understanding.

In English, Lilac Class this week will start their new piece of extended writing.  We will be writing a recount based on the sinking of the Titanic.  The children are going to imagine that they are Frederick Fleet up in crow’s nest of the Titanic.  There has been seven iceberg warnings. How do you feel?  What do you see and hear? What words can you use to describe the giant iceberg when it appears in front of you?

The children are thoroughly enjoying our new Whole Class Guided Reading text for the Summer Term entitled ‘Shackleton’s Journey’ by William Grill about Ernest Shackleton’s expedition to Antarctica.  We have been finding out the meaning of a lot of technical language such as ‘boatswain’, ‘meteorologist’, ‘biologist’, ‘geologist’ and ‘navigating officer’,

In RE, we are continuing to find out about why the Five Pillars of Islam are important to Muslims.  Key questions are ‘How is life like a journey?’; ‘What do people need to support them on that journey?’; ‘What do Muslim people believe and do to help them on their life’s journey?’; ‘How does this help me to think more deeply about my life as a journey?’

In Science this week, we will be learning what molluscs, invertebrates, vertebrates, arthropods and exoskeletons are and what animals belong to each group.  In Topic, we are building on our atlas and map reading skills by identifying and labelling the main rivers of the world and Great Britain.  We will also be learning about how a river is formed and the journey of a river as it travels to the sea.   In Art, we are looking carefully at a selection of different shells.  Our task is to create a close observation drawing of a shell using soft pastels.
