1.Grammar activities for Thursday and Friday mornings

I have uploaded 2 Classroom Secrets grammar activities and power point slides to accompany each activity about using modal verbs. Work through the Varied Fluency (revision) today and the Application and Reasoning tomorrow.  Answers are given.  Please complete the sheet that you normally work from.

2. Maths

Today we are now ready to divide by 10, 100 and 1,000.  Please watch the White Rose Learning Video using the link vimeo.com/475824080 to divide by 10, 100 and 1,000. Please remember to pause the video when you need to do calculations and give yourself plenty of time. Also remember that the answers are always given by the person who is presenting the videos. Remember to also show any of your working out. I have uploaded the White Rose worksheet and answer sheet. If you feel confident I have also uploaded Maths Mastery Challenge Cards with answers about dividing and multiplying by 10, 100 and 1,000.

1. Today I would like you to start a piece of writing entitled ‘Life in the Workhouse’.  Use your notes from the BBC Bite Size Videos, Chapters 4 and 5 from ‘Street Child’ and the reading comprehension text ‘Escaping The Workhouse’.  I would like you to imagine that you have escaped and Dr Barnardo has found you and is looking after you in one of his homes.  Give yourself a Victorian name and tell Dr Barnardo all about your life in the workhouse.  Consider the following:

What did the workhouse look like from the outside?

What did it look like in the inside?

What happened to you when you first arrived?

What was washing like?

Describe your clothes.

What work did you do?

What was mealtime like?

What did you eat?

Describe your dormitory and bed.

How did you move about the workhouse?

Were families kept together?

2.  Continue working through your new ‘Talk for Writing’ Booklet ‘Wonderful Wizards’.  Finish your Trump Cards.

2. Science

My explanation of the results for testing insulators

Yesterday we conducted our experiment (that was a fair test) to find out whether wool, foil, newspaper or cling film was the best insulator.  Our result was that wool was the best insulator because after taking the temperature of the water every 15 minutes for an hour and a half it had the highest temperature at 31 degrees Centigrade or Celsius.  The cling film had the lowest at 27 degrees Centigrade or Celsius. The newspaper was 29 degrees Centigrade or Celsius and the foil was 28 degrees Centigrade or Celsius. As you can see the results are very close.  I would like you to explain our results.  Was your prediction right?  We discussed as a class that it was not a completely fair test because the mug covered with wool was nearest the open window.  How do you think this may have affected the results?  How would covering the top of the mugs as well as the sides affect the results? Does the thickness of a material mean that it is a really good insulator?
