Term 1 Week 4

Here is an outline of your learning for term 1, week 4.

Term 1 Week 4 – overview

Reading challenge – we have made a visual display to track our home reading.  Each week when reading records are checked, every child who brings their record (completed with their weekly reading) will earn a star.  Remember that 10 minutes reading each day makes a huge difference to overall literacy and especially expanding vocabulary!

Our ukulele lesson with Mr Lawrence will be on Monday morning.  Ukuleles are provided by school.

Spelling and grammar –we will be practising a selection of the words from the statutory year 3 and 4 spelling list.  We will also be working on how to correctly punctuate direct speech and using the simple past tense.

In English, we continue to focus on the book ‘Escape from Pompeii’ by Christina Ballit.  This week, we will look at the signs that something is wrong by picking them out of the text.  Using drama, we will develop our ideas about how Tranio and Livia were feeling as the eruption began.  At the end of the week, we will start to plan our own versions of the story, beginning with developing our own main characters.

In Maths we will be completing a short assessment.  After this, we return to place value using number lines to 10,000 and compare numbers up to 10,000.

In guided reading we will be continuing with our text ‘The Magic Finger’ by Roald Dahl.  This is a very fun text to use to develop our comprehension skills.

In RE, our unit of focus is ‘Creation’ and we will be looking at the text from Genesis and thinking about what message it is delivering to Christians.

In History, we will continue our learning journey by investigating how the Romans changed Britain.  We will be looking at where Rome is considering the geographical features that made it suitable as a settlement.  We will be debating the merit of the geographical features versus the explanation provided by the legend of Romulus and Remus.

In Science, we will continue the unit on sound.  We will be learning about sound waves and the difference between louder and quieter sounds.  We will also consider how sound travels to our ears.

In Art, we are looking at the still life paintings of Giorgio Morandi.  We have completed some sketches of a selection of his paintings and will be arranging our own still life objects based on his style.

PE is on MONDAY MORNING and THURSDAY AFTERNOON with Mr Luckhurst.

Reading records have been sent home with most children choosing a book from the selection in class or from the reading scheme.  All children have an additional book in their tray for reading sessions in class.  Please could we have reading records in school to be checked on Tuesday and Friday mornings.

Homework will be issued this Wednesday and is due in on the following Monday.

Please contact me if you have any queries using the class email address:chestnut@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

Have a lovely week!

Best wishes,
