Term 1 Week 2

Here is an outline of your learning for term 1 week 2

Term 1 Week 2 – overview

Reading challenge – we have made a visual display to track our home reading.  Each week when reading records are checked, every child who brings their record (completed with their weekly reading) they will earn a star.  Remember that 10 minutes reading each day makes a huge difference to overall literacy and especially expanding vocabulary!

Our ukulele lessons with Mr Lawrence begin on Monday morning.  Ukuleles are provided by school.

Spelling and grammar – learning how to spell a range of homophones and practising using them correctly in sentences.  We will also be expanding sentences using conjunctions and adverbs.

In English, we are starting to look at the book ‘Escape from Pompeii’ by Christina Ballit.  Focusing on the start of the book, we will be working on sensory description in writing.  We will look at how the author uses all the senses to build a mental picture and have a go at creating our own descriptions.  We will also be using thesaurus to find homophones to make our writing more interesting.

In Maths, we will be working on place value skills which underpin all our mathematical work.  We will be looking at how we can use number lines to work with numbers up to 1,000 and representing numbers up to 10, 000.

In guided reading we will be commencing our text ‘The Magic Finger’ by Roald Dahl.  This is a very fun text to use to develop our skills of comprehension.

In RE our unit of focus is ‘Creation’ and we will begin by focusing on what we think is extraordinary in creation.

In History, we will begin our learning journey investigating how the Romans changed Britain.  We will start with a brainstorm of what we already know about the Romans and Roman Britain and what we would like to find out about.

In Art, we are looking at the still life paintings of Giorgio Morandi.  We have completed some sketches of a selection of his paintings and will be attempting to mimic his muted range of colours by blending coloured pencils.

PE is on MONDAY MORNING and FRIDAY AFTERNOON with Mr Luckhurst.

Reading records have been sent home with most children choosing a book from the selection in class or from the reading scheme.  All children have an additional book in their tray for reading sessions in class.  Please could we have reading records in school to be checked on Tuesday and Friday mornings.

Homework will be issued this Wednesday and is due in on the following Monday.

Please contact me if you have any queries using the class email address:chestnut@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

Have a lovely week!

Best wishes,
