Term 5 Week 4

Here is an outline of your learning for term 5, week 4

Term 5 Week 4 – overview

After the Bank Holiday last Monday, we have our ukulele lesson again this week!

We will be relocating to the hall for some of our learning sessions this week so that Year 6 have enough quiet space for their SATs.  We wish them all the best of luck.  During our time with Year 5 in the hall we will be dedicating some time to music.

Spelling and grammar – we will be working on understanding paragraphs and using fronted adverbials in paragraphs.  In spelling sessions, we will be looking at some key words from a range of learning areas.

In our maths lessons we will be continuing our unit on fractions.  We will be adding and subtracting fractions, including subtraction from whole numbers.  We will also continue to work on fluency in times tables.  We have begun to practise times tables using the format of the national test that we will be completing in June.  Regular short burst of practise at home will enhance speed and fluency in this regard.  Hit the Button is a game we regularly use to prepare ourselves and I really recommend this as an activity to try at home.

In English we will using drama to generate ideas for our own hero myths and will begin planning them.

We will be continuing our guided reading text Varjak Paw, written by SF Said.

In RE we continue with our study of the Hindu religion with a focus on Brahman and how Hindus believe he is in every living thing.  We will consider how this belief affects how Hindu people live their lives.

In our topic session we will learn about the Scots and the Picts and their part in the struggle for power in the Anglo Saxon period.

PE is now on MONDAY MORNING with Mr Luckhurst.  On Friday, the children will be having an extra PE lesson with Mrs Smallcombe in the afternoon.  Please ensure that they have their PE kits with them.

We have had our first lesson using the animation program and will continue adding scenes and effects to our Beowulf cartoons.

Reading records have been sent home with most children choosing a book from the selection in class.  All children have an additional book in their tray for reading sessions in class.  Please could we have reading records in school to be checked on a Wednesday morning.

Homework will be issued this Thursday and is due in on the following Monday.

Please contact me if you have any queries using the class email address:chestnut@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

Have a lovely week!

Best wishes,

Mrs Barter
