Term 5 Week 1

Here is an outline of your learning for term 5, week 1.

Term 5 Week 1– overview

WELCOME BACK!

Ukulele lessons will continue next week.

Spelling and grammar – we will be working on using standard English, with a focus on correct use of were or was and me or I. Spelling will be words with the sc spelling of ‘s’ words, such as science.

In our maths lessons we will be continuing our unit on fractions.  We will be revising tenths and counting in tenths.  We will also begin working with equivalent fractions.  We will also continue to work on fluency in times tables and this work is being set every week as homework.  We are working towards the national times tables test and I will shortly be sending out some information for you about this.

In English we are beginning a piece of work based on the Anglo-Saxon epic, Beowulf.  This links to our overall scheme of learning which is the Anglo-Saxons.  We will be using an adapted version of the hero myth.  This week we are familiarising ourselves with the tale and thinking about to describe the ultimate hero, using superlatives.  We will also study the initial setting, contrasting the wild landscape with the interior of the great hall of Hereot.

We will be finishing our guided reading text The Boy Who Grew Dragons before we begin our next text, Varjak Paw.

In RE we move on to studying the Hindu religion.  This term we will be exploring the framework of the faith, beginning with a lesson on its origins.

Our historical and geographical is based on the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain.  We will begin by thinking about what archaeological sources we have to inform our understanding.

PE is now on MONDAY MORNING with Mr Luckhurst.

Reading records have been sent home with most children choosing a book from the selection in class.  All children have an additional book in their tray for reading sessions in class.  Please could we have reading records in school to be checked on a Wednesday morning.

Homework will be issued this Thursday and is due in on the following Monday.

Please contact me if you have any queries using the class email address:chestnut@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

Have a lovely week!
