Term 1, week 5

This week in English, we will be continuing with the work based on the book How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth by Michelle Robinson, using prepositions and identifying further the features and language of instructions. At the end of the week, we will start preparing some drama relating to the book.

Guided reading this week will feature an extract from E B White’s book, Stuart Little. The children will listen to the story to build familiarity, read in pairs and then answering questions to discuss the narrative and language features of the text.

In Maths this week we will continue to focus on place value, further investigating flexible petitioning of numbers to 1,000, calculating 1, 10 and 100 more, and then using number lines to 1,000. Times tables will continue through the week, with opportunities for the children to practise their tables and then completing a times table challenge.

In our topic work, we will investigate what life was like for Neolithic farmers during the Stone Age, plus identifying how digital devices help us in computing.

Mrs Johnson will continue with the People of God unit in RE this week.

Mrs Tompsett will continue with the ‘animals including humans’ unit on Friday, investigating the function of muscles and how/why they needed for support, protection and movement. The children will complete the weekly spelling test (words can be found in the home learning section) and have their weekly French session.

Maple class have PE on Mondays and Thursdays, and both sessions will be with myself and Mr Luckhurst.

Reading Records will generally be changed on a Monday and Thursday. We would ask however, that children bring their books and Reading Records in to school each day and that they aim to read daily, ideally with an adult – details of this can then be recorded in the Reading Record. Pleased do contact me if you feel your child’s book is either too easy or too difficult, or if your child’s book has not been changed. There are times when a book will be sent home more than once, either because a child is reading chapter books, or if it is felt that the book needs to be read more than once to enhance familiarity.
