Term 1, week 3
Another great week in Maple class, with the children very settled in their new class and producing some lovely work!
This week will look a little different as the children will be completing some baseline assessments in maths and English. The assessments will be very informal and the children will also have some fun activities too.
Guided reading this week will be based on a short extract from Anne Fine’s book, Bill’s New Frock. The children will have the opportunity to listen to the stories to build familiarity, and then answer questions to discuss the narrative and language features. The children will then complete independent work to confirm their understanding of the text.
In Maths later this week we will still be focusing on place value, revisiting some more year 2 concepts, plus looking at representing numbers to 1,000. Times tables will be an ongoing feature, with the children completing a times table challenge each week.
We have now started the Time and Place topic, looking at the Stone Age, and last we considered where this fitted in on a timeline. This week we will be investigating cave art and producing our own cave art pictures.
In computing, the children will be discussing digital devices and considering how these are designed and created.
Mrs Johnson will continue with the People of God unit in RE this week.
Mrs Tompsett will build on the ‘animals including humans’ unit on Friday, investigating the function of a skeleton. The children will complete the weekly spelling test (words can be found in the home learning section) and have their weekly French session too!
Maple class have PE on Mondays and Thursdays, and both sessions will be with myself and Mr Luckhurst.
Reading Records have been sent home for most children, and will generally be changed on a Monday and Thursday. We would ask however, that children bring their books and Reading Records in to school each day and that they aim to read daily, ideally with an adult – details of this can then be recorded in the Reading Record. The books coming home initially, will be based on advice from the Year 2 team and follow the new phonics scheme for those not already free reading. However, we do understand that children progress at different rates during the summer holidays, so pleased do contact me if you feel your child’s book is either too easy or too difficult.
