Week 4, term 5

Another reminder for those who have not yet managed to see me to discuss their child’s progress, please do email and we can arrange a suitable time.

In maths this week, we will be continuing with fractions, looking at tenths as decimals, placing fractions on a numberline and considering fractions in relation to a set of objects. Our times table focus is going really well, with the children all making great progress.

In English this week, we will be continuing to discussing ‘King of the Sky’, using this text as a basis to further improve our punctuation of direct speech and reporting clauses. We have been comparing the book to other, similar texts and considering some emotive language to describe the feelings of different characters, which we will be building on further this week.

Whole class reading will feature extracts from some of the books by Roald Dahl. The children are enjoying looking at different texts, stories, songs and poems to enrich their vocabulary and broaden their reading opportunities.

In topic work this week, we will be further increasing our knowledge of ‘Ancient Egyptians’, looking at stories surrounding Tutankhamun and the rituals of mummification.

In RE this week, Mrs Johnson will help the children to make links between the description of the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2, the Holy Spirit and the Kingdom of God, and how Christians live their whole lives and in their church communities.

In music, we will continue to build on the body percussion skills we have been learning, playing some musical games and becoming more and more tuneful!

Maple class have PE on Thursdays and Fridays, preparing athletic skills for our sports day!

On Friday, Mrs Tompsett will continue to focus on emails in ICT, do the spellings tests and further whole class reading. The children will be using clay to create artefacts for their Egyptian tombs and the forth unit, introducing them to speaking French

Homework will be sent out on Tuesday, to be returned the following Monday as usual. Reading Records should come into school daily and will generally be changed on a Monday and Thursday. We ask that the children aim to read daily, ideally with an adult, and please do write a comment in their reading records to tell us how they are getting on.

Any additional times tables practice would be very beneficial moving forward. There are lots of games online which can make learning their tables fun.

The children are becoming much more independent with their homework and reading records, but please do remind them to put the relevant books in the basket in class. If you haven’t seen their homework or reading records for a while, please do ask them and let me know if there is an issue. Can I please remind you to encourage the children to complete the online element of the homework too, letting me know if there is a problem with this.

As usual, I am happy to answer any questions you may have so please do contact me if you have any queries, using the class email address:
