Week 3, Term 5

It has been so lovely to catch up with most of you during the Parent Consultations. I have especially enjoyed hearing stories of how the children explain what we have been doing in school! For those who have not yet managed to see me, please do email, and we can arrange a suitable time.

In maths this week, we will be continuing with fractions, building on counting in fractions, making whole numbers from fractions, and investigating ‘tenths’/counting in tenths. We are also continuing with the additional focus on times tables.

In English this week, we will be continuing to discussing ‘King of the Sky’, using this text as a basis to further improve our punctuation of direct speech and reporting clauses.

Whole class reading will continue to be based on non-fiction this week, looking at some more inspirational, notable people from around the world.

In topic work this week, we will be increasing our knowledge of ‘Ancient Egyptians’, looking further into what life was like in Ancient Egypt.

In RE this week, Mrs Johnson will be teaching the children more about Pentecost, what happened and how it has affected Christian beliefs today.

On Thursday last week, we built on the body percussion skills we are learning in music! This was great fun and will continue again this week, with us learning a further section of the body percussion sequence.

Maple class have PE on Thursdays and Fridays, both sessions will be with Mr Luckhurst.

On Friday, Mrs Tompsett will continue to focus on emails in ICT, do the spellings tests and further whole class non-fiction reading. The children have begun to use oil pastels to create their Egyptian tombs, which they will continue this week. The children will also be moving on to the third unit, introducing them to speaking French. I understand from Mrs Tompsett that the children are enjoying this fun way of learning a modern foreign language!

Homework will be sent out on Tuesday, if we can turn the books round quickly following the bank holiday, with details also on the class blog. Reading Records should come into school daily and will generally be changed on a Monday and Thursday. We ask that the children aim to read daily, ideally with an adult and please do write a comment in their reading records to tell us how they are getting on.

Any additional times tables practice would be very beneficial moving forward. There are lots of games online which can make learning their tables fun.

The children are becoming much more independent with their homework and reading records, but please do remind them to put the relevant books in the basket in class. If you haven’t seen their homework or reading records for a while, please do ask them and let me know if there is an issue.

As usual, I am happy to answer any questions you may have so please do contact me if you have any queries, using the class email address:
