Term 5, week 2

It has been lovely to see the children back at school and enjoying their learning!

In maths this week, we will be continuing with fractions, beginning the week counting in fractions, then making whole numbers from fractions, before investigating ‘tenths’ and then counting in tenths. We are also continuing with the additional focus on times tables.

In English this week, we will be discussing ‘King of the Sky’, using this text as a basis to begin adding punctuation to direct speech, punctuation dialogue and adding reporting clauses. At the end of the week, we will write a dialogue between a group of characters.

Whole class reading will continue to be based on non-fiction this week, looking at some inspirational, notable people from around the world.

In topic work this week, we will be continuing with our new topic, ‘Ancient Egyptians’, looking this week at what life was like in Ancient Egypt.

In RE this week, Mrs Johnson will be teaching the children about Pentecost, what happened and how it has affected Christian beliefs today.

On Thursday last week, we started music sessions, beginning to learn all about body percussion! This was great fun and will continue again this week, with us learning further a section of a body percussion sequence.

Maple class have PE on Thursdays and Fridays, both sessions will be with Mr Luckhurst.

On Friday, Mrs Tompsett will continue to focus on emails in ICT, do the spellings tests and further whole class non-fiction reading. The children have begun to design their Egyptian tombs, which they will use to begin their models this week. The children will also be moving on to the second unit, introducing them to speaking French. I understand from Mrs Tompsett that the children enjoyed the first unit!

Homework will be sent out on Tuesday as usual this week, with details also on the class blog. Reading Records should come into school daily and will generally be changed on a Monday and Thursday. We ask that the children aim to read daily, ideally with an adult, and please do write a comment in their reading records to tell us how they are getting on.

Any additional times tables practice would be very beneficial moving forward. There are lots of games online which can make learning their tables fun.

It has been brought to my attention that some of the children have struggled to access the Classroom Secrets for Kids element of their homework. I think, in some instances, that it is due to being on the Classroom Secrets site, rather than the Classroom Secrets for Kids site. Please do check this first but let me know if that doesn’t resolve the problem. I have checked and all the children have been registered to receive the links, so there shouldn’t be a problem. Many thanks to those parents/carers who were in touch to tell me.

On the same theme, there are some children not completing the online element of their homework, which is not ideal. If there is a problem with access/facilities, do get in touch so that we can arrange for alternative provision or help to resolve any problems.

The children are becoming much more independent with their homework and reading records, but please do remind them to put the relevant books in the basket in class. If you haven’t seen their homework or reading records for a while, please do ask them and let me know if there is an issue.

As usual, I am happy to answer any questions you may have so please do contact me if you have any queries, using the class email address:
