Term 5, Week 1

I hope you have all had a lovely Easter Break and managed to enjoy the sunny weather we have had. Term 5 already! The children have all worked so hard over the last four terms, let’s hope the fine weather continues, so we can get outside more, taking some of our learning outside over the next two terms.

I hope you enjoy the photo of the button art we completed last term. The children worked so hard on these, creating the shape of the British Isles, selecting buttons and completing their beautiful pictures. We will try to do more button art before the end of the year!

In maths this week, we will be starting to look at fractions, beginning with halves and quarters. We are also continuing with the additional focus on times tables.

In English this week, we will be introducing a new text, King of the Sky by Nicola Davies, which will be our focus over the coming weeks. Concentrating on direct speech and the use of paragraphs, the children will ultimately be writing narratives based on this beautifully written and illustrated story.

Whole class reading will be based on non-fiction this week, looking at some inspirational, notable people from around the world.

In topic work this week, we will be introducing our new topic, ‘Ancient Egyptians’, beginning with a look at location, how this fits into the general timeline of world history and considering how artefacts help us to learn more about history.

In RE this week, the children will begin the Kingdom of God unit with Mrs Johnson, starting with making links between the story of the Day of Pentecost and Christian beliefs.

Maple class have PE on Thursdays and Fridays, both sessions will be with Mr Luckhurst.

On Friday, Mrs Tompsett will focus on emails in ICT, do the spellings tests and further whole class non-fiction reading, plus finish the artwork based on 1950s posters. There will also be an introduction to speaking French, which will be a fun, interactive session each week.

Homework will be sent out on Wednesday this week, due to the bank holiday, with details also on the class blog. If the delay in sending out the homework is a problem for anyone, please do let me know, as I know how tricky it can be to fit everything into each week. Reading Records should come into school daily and will generally be changed on a Monday and Thursday. We ask that the children aim to read daily, ideally with an adult, and please do write a comment in their reading records to tell us how they are getting on.

Any additional times tables practice would be very beneficial moving forward. There are lots of games online which can make learning their tables fun.

The children are becoming much more independent with their homework and reading records, but please do remind them to put the relevant books in the basket in class. If you haven’t seen their homework or reading records for a while, please do ask them and let me know if there is an issue.

As usual, I am happy to answer any questions you may have so please do contact me if you have any queries, using the class email address:
