Term 2, Week 2

A quick reminder that it is not too late to book a slot to chat about your child’s progress so far this year. If you missed the parent consultations, please do email, and we can arrange a convenient time.

In maths this week, we will continue to look at addition and subtraction, recapping some of the work covered last year and moving towards adding 3-digit and 1-digit numbers – crossing 10.

Last week, we started a new project in English, based on the Stone Age Boy book by Satoshi Kitamura. The children will investigate the use of adverbials of time and place, practice using a thesaurus and prepare a short drama piece based on a text.

We will continue to use the same book for our guided reading sessions, focusing on comprehension skills and retrieval of information.

In our Stone Age to Iron Age topic, we will consider how the discovery of bronze changed the way society functioned and look at the process of smelting to create bronze.

Building on previous work involving rocks in science, we will be looking at the importance of soil, how it is made and the different types of soil. This will be in preparation for a science experiment later this term.

In RE, Mrs Johnson and the class will identify the difference between a ‘Gospel’, which tells the story of the life and teaching of Jesus, and a letter. The children will highlight blessings would we like to wish upon our friends and have wished upon ourselves. This will culminate in them writing a Maple class ‘grace’.

On Friday, Mrs Tompsett will begin continue looking at online safety. The children will also be doing a times table challenge and their weekly spelling test. We will be walking to the Trinity Theatre in the afternoon to watch My Neighbour Totoro.

Maple class have PE on Thursdays and Fridays, both sessions will be with Mr Luckhurst.

Homework will be sent out on Tuesday this week, with details also on the class blog. Reading Records should come into school daily and will generally be changed on a Monday and Thursday. As usual, we ask that the children aim to read daily, ideally with an adult, and please do write a comment in their reading records to tell us how they are getting on. We are encouraging the children to be more independent with their homework and reading records, so please do remind them to put the relevant books in the basket in class.

I am happy to answer any questions you may have, so please do contact me if you have any queries, using the class email address:
