Term 1 week 2

W/C 13th September 2021

Term 1 week 2

What a lovely week we had in Maple last week! It has been a pleasure to get to know the children, and we have been very proud of how they have settled into their new classroom.

This week we will continue to focus our learning around ‘Quest’ — the wordless book by Aaron Beaker, using this as our theme for a number of different activities. In our English sessions, we will build on our own stories, linked to ‘Quest’, sharing the story through drama and question time.

Guided reading this week will continue with The Hodgeheg by Dick King Smith, moving on to chapters three and four. Again, questions regarding the narrative and language features will help to confirm understanding of the text, with independent work being completed towards the end of the week.

In Maths this week we will continue to focusing on place value, completing the revision of some year 2 concepts, including representing numbers to 100, and tens and ones using addition. Later in the week, the children will begin to explore the relationship between tens and ones, and how this relates to hundreds. Times tables will be an ongoing feature, with the children completing a times table challenge each week.

In RE, Mrs Johnson will be focusing on the links between promises made in the story of Noah and the promises Christians make at a wedding ceremony.

On Friday, Mrs Tompsett will continue working with the class to create their own board games (as part of our ‘Quest’ topic) and we will also be continuing to use our design techniques to create 3D castles.

Maple class have PE on Thursdays and Fridays, both sessions will be with Mr Luckhurst.

Home Learning will be sent out on Tuesday this week, with details also on the class blog. Reading Records should come into school daily and will generally be changed on a Monday and Thursday. As usual, we ask that the children aim to read daily, ideally with an adult, and please do write a comment in their reading records to tell us how they are getting on. The reading records are different to last year’s, but we are happy for both you and your child to complete each section in a way which works for you. Please do make contact if you have any questions regarding the books which are sent home each week — especially if you feel your child’s book is either too easy or too difficult.

I am always happy to answer any questions you may have, so please do contact me if you have any queries, using the class email address:

Best wishes
