Term 2 Week 2

Welcome back to the Willow Class Blog.

In Maths this week we are going to be learning about subtraction.  We will start the week by talking about some of the language around subtraction (take away, less, how many are left, count back, minus) and subtracting by taking away to start with. During the week we will be counting back on a number line and investigating number fact families. If you want to know more about what we are covering, you can look for extra activities on the White Rose Maths website Year 1 Home Learning Week 8 (https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/week-8-number-addition-subtraction/).

In English we will be using the book Blown Away by Rob Biddulph as a prompt for our writing. We will be retelling the story orally and then using time connectives (first, then, after that, finally) to write about it.  In Phonics we will be practising reading and writing words with the ur (fur, curl), oa (goat, coat), oo (food, tooth) and oo (book, look) sounds in them.

In Science we are going to continue learning about materials and their uses. This week we will be making kites from different materials and flying them to see which materials work best. Please feel free to make and test your own kites at home.

For Wednesday’s PE session we will be doing gymnastics in the hall and on Thursday the children will be on the school field doing activities (weather permitting).

This week in RE we will be talking about the Nativity story and will be sequencing the events leading up to Jesus’ birth.

Home Learning

For home learning this week, ask your child to narrate and sequence something you do at home or on the way to school (for example getting ready for bed, cooking something, walking to school). Get them to use time connectives in their explanation (first, then, next, after that, finally). It would be lovely if your child and you write down the order in which you do things. For example, you might say… First I wake up and go downstairs. Next I eat my breakfast. Then I brush my teeth.

This week also try playing some Phonics games on PhonicsPlay and practising our sounds of the week. The school log in will be sent home on Monday afternoon.

If you want to know more about anything we are learning about or have any questions,  please feel free to contact us via the class email address: willow@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk.
