What we are learning this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 9.6.25
For Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are continuing to explore regular and irregular polygons. What are the features of a polygon and can a polygon have a curved side? How do we know that the shape is regular or irregular? Lilac Class will also be exploring the properties of 3D shapes and comparing them. We will then be starting a new unit of learning entitled ‘Position and Direction’. Lilac Class will learn to read and plot coordinates and solve problems with coordinates.
In English this week in Lilac Class, we are starting to level up and develop our drafts of our newspaper article about the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. We will be using our planning drawn from a range of information texts including actual newspaper articles written just after the Titanic sank. We will be using the features of a newspaper report – Headline, Byline, Lead, Body, Picture and Caption and Tail. This week we are developing our writing about our eyewitness/survivor accounts of the tragedy.
For our Guided Reading text, Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill this week, we are reading pages 37-42. Lilac Class are thinking about the effect of the illustrations on the meaning of the text and why they tell us so much about what is happening in the story.
For RE in Lilac Class, we are finding out about the role of the Mosque in the Muslim community and why the Mosque is important. We will also be learning about the different features of the Mosque and what you would expect to find inside one.
For Time and Place in Lilac Class, we are learning about the different climate zones of India and finding out about biomes and vegetation belts. We will learn what ‘highlands’, ‘humid’, 'sub-tropical’, ‘semi-arid’, ‘arid’ and ‘tropical wet’ mean. For Science in Lilac Class, we are comparing different groups of animals and how they reproduce. We will also be comparing how different animals within each animal group bring up their young.
In ICT Lilac Class are copying parts of a drawing by duplicating several objects and further developing our Vector drawing by putting our designs onto a background that is a photograph. In Spanish this week we are learning about Spain as a country (currency, where it is located, what is a traditional dish and what is a traditional musical instrument, for example) and studying a map of Spain. We will then create our own fact file about the country.
For Design and the Arts, we are using our sketches of our school garden as a basis for painting using the techniques of the artist Annie Soudain.
