What we are learning in Lilac Class for the week beginning 5.5.25
What we are learning this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 5.5.25
For Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are reading and interpreting two-way tables and then timetables. We will be exploring the information these give us and how a timetable is the same and different from a two-way table. Lilac Class are then moving onto a new unit of learning entitled ‘Shape’. We will be learning to understand and use degrees, finding out what clockwise and anticlockwise mean and recognising how many degrees are in a right angle, a full, half and quarter of a turn. Lilac Class will then learn about classifying angles and finding out how many degrees are in a right angle and on a straight line. We will be learning about acute, obtuse and acute angles.
In English this week in Lilac Class, we are writing up a final ‘best copy’ of our sea poetry for a class book for our reading area. We have read a range of poetry, for example, selected poems from Under the Moon and Over the Sea edited by John Agard and Grace Nichols. We have also analysed these poems focusing on examples of personification (where the sea has taken on human characteristics). We have used the poems as stimulus for our own poetry writing.
Our new Whole Class Guided Reading text is Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill. This week we are reading pages 13-18 developing our explanation and inference skills. Lilac Class will be thinking about whether Ernest Shackleton was right to get rid of some of his crew and how the crew felt when the Endurance set sail. Why did it take a month to make final preparations?
For RE in Lilac Class, we are considering who supports us in our lives and has supported us during key events in our life journey so far. For Time and Place in Lilac Class, we are learning about how rivers are formed and the journey of a river. We will be thinking about the role the water cycle plays in the formation of rivers. For Science in Lilac Class, we are continuing with our learning about how flowering plants, completing a life cycle diagram that shows each stage of the process – pollination, fertilisation, seed dispersal, germination, leading to the growth of a flowering plant.
In ICT, Lilac Class are creating vector drawings by combining shapes and coloured shapes using Google Drawings, experimenting with the shape and line tools. In Spanish this week we are finishing our work about words for numbers in Spanish up to 30, completing a wordsearch.
For Design and the Arts, we are singing songs about the sea and accompanying them with pitched and unpitched percussion. Lilac Class will be learning traditional musical notation, for example, crotchets, quavers, minims and semibreves.
