  • Friday Challenge!

    Published 30/01/21, by Charlie Mackinnon

I was reading the news this week when I saw an article about the professional tennis player, Edouard Roger-Vasselin. He is currently isolating before the start of the Australian Open Tennis Tournament. While he was stuck in his hotel room, he created this chain reaction machine:

A machine that is designed to perform a job using a chain reaction is called a Rube Goldberg machine.

    Challenge 1:

Use a key word search to find videos of Rube Goldberg machines in action. Can you find examples of extremely complicated Rube Goldberg machines like this?

Can you find examples of very simple Rube Goodman Machines like this?

Please share with us your favourite example of a Rube Goldberg machine.

    Challenge 2:

Can you make your own simple Rube Goldberg machine.

First, think of a very simple task- getting a ball in a bin for example.

Next, design a chain reaction which will result in the task getting completed.

Then, fine tune and extend your chain reaction.

Finally, photograph or film your machine in action and send it into you class email address. We will announce the winners of this challenge in celebration assembly next Friday.
