Term 2 Week 1

Here is an outline of your learning for term 2, week 1:
Term 2 Week 1– overview
Our ukulele lessons with Mr Lawrence will continue next week. Ukuleles are provided by the school.
Spelling and grammar – we will be learning and practising words with the prefixes dis and mis. We will also continue brushing up on correct sentence punctuation.
We will begin a new text in whole class guided reading, The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. This is a very interesting text with rich language which we are aiming to develop by exploring a range of text types.
In English, we will be continuing with our text, Escape from Pompeii, by Christina Ballit. This ties in with our history enquiry, ‘What did the Romans do for us?’. We will create our own characters with authentic Roman names and provide as much detail as we can so that we really bring them to life in our writing. We will also be mapping out our stories so we can begin our creative magic!
In Maths, we will complete place value, working on our understanding of rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000. We will then complete an end of unit assessment before moving on to addition and subtraction. We will be adding and subtracting 1, 10, 100 and 1,000. On Thursday we dedicate time to working on our personal times tables targets. Regular, short burst practise at home will really support this. Each week, pupils are progressing with their personal targets which is very encouraging.
This term we will be studying a unit on Incarnation in RE. We will discuss the Biq Question ‘what is the Trinity?’ and will examine an image related to the theme to draw out our prior knowledge.
In Science, we continue to work on sound and will be carrying out an investigation into pitch.
We will continue to investigate the work of the artist Giorgio Morandi, by creating our own still life sets to sketch and colour-match.
In Computing, pupils will be exploring how to record and edit sound.
PE lessons are on Tuesday morning with Mrs Barter and Thursday afternoon with Mrs Tompsett. This term we will focus on hockey and yoga.
Reading records will be sent home, with free-reading children choosing a book from the selection in class or bringing one from the reading scheme. All children have an additional book in their tray for reading sessions in class. Please could we have reading records in school to be checked on Tuesday and Friday mornings.
Homework is issued on Wednesday and is due the following Monday morning. It will usually consist of a Maths activity and an English activity based on what we have been learning in class. One of these will be online, using the Purple Mash platform. Pupils have new usernames and passwords this year, which have been stuck in the front of their homework books.
